The MLM Stigma

Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies, also referred to as network marketing or direct selling companies, have existed for decades and have received both praise and criticism. Now there is definitely a difference between Multi-level Marketing, Direct Selling and Network Marketing.

One of the biggest criticisms of MLMs is the perception that those who enter earlier or build large organisations have an inherent advantage over those who join later. This is one of the reasons it is so important to understand how a company's compensation plan actually works, where the money comes from, and whether genuine customer sales—not recruitment alone—drive the business.

Direct Selling - is when someone you know, suggests a product that might be good for you, and they earn a commission from the purchase you make (and of course they may have certain additional conditions to earn that commission).

Network Marketing - is really just that - marketing within your network and expanding your network - if you find something useful and helpful - would you share it with those you know?

Some individuals see MLMs as deceptive schemes, while others consider them valid business opportunities with numerous advantages. Before you read any further, about 6 years ago, I was introduced to something that changed my life - little did I know it was a Direct Selling Company. Not once was I approached to share my experience or suggest the products to someone else.

Now isn't that interesting?

And then 4 years ago, I was introduced to yet ANOTHER Direct Selling Company - now THIS one - encouraged me to share - because I had the opportunity to help people who were in need of these natural solutions. And when I realized how MANY people are coming in to my center and bakery with health issues - and didn't know where to start with fixing the root problems - I decided to spend a little time - helping people find the answers they were looking for, just like someone helped me.

I'm going to share a few observations on what I believe makes these companies good.

These kinds of companies offer individuals the chance to become entrepreneurs and launch their own businesses with ease. Traditional enterprises typically demand significant capital to begin; Direct Selling or Network Marketing companies provide a low-cost entry point. Most traditional businesses require licences and clearances and approvals of all kinds... With Direct Selling companies - many formalities get taken care of by the company. AND accounting is usually a breeze - filing returns, ensuring all taxes are paid - it's a seamless process because they're doing this for hundreds of thousands or in some countries - millions of their members!

All the operational complexities—such as manufacturing, product compliance, logistics and much of the back-end administration — are handled centrally by the company.

This allows anyone with a modest amount of money to start their own business and have the opportunity to thrive not just financially, but also socially. Direct Selling companies create an equal opportunity environment where success depends on personal effort, determination, and persistence, irrespective of one's educational background, previous work experience, age (legally allowed to work/ earn), or skill set. Gender is no barrier either. Nor race, nor caste - there's no discrimination OF ANY KIND!

Secondly, Direct Selling companies offer a wide range of products and services to their customers. These products and services are often unique, high-quality, and competitively priced. By purchasing products from a Direct Selling company, customers not only support small businesses, but they also gain access to innovative and exclusive products that may not be available in traditional retail stores. AND - the customer gets supported by someone they know - and someone who will in all probability be available to them anytime to help with the product use/ training/ guidance. It isn't a case like with a sales-person - product sold, and then you need to find another department for service or support.

Thirdly, Direct Selling companies provide an opportunity for personal growth and development. These companies often offer training and support to their members, helping them to develop skills such as communication and public speaking, leadership - leading their teams and enabling their team members to grow, and entrepreneurship. They help folks break out of those shells and get creative and actually become more confident about everything - especially their self-worth. They also help people develop social skills - kindness, patience, understanding - and wouldn't you agree that this is a good way to be?

Many Direct Selling companies also provide opportunities for travel, recognition, and rewards to their members who achieve certain milestones. They take members to the source of their production, sometimes connecting the end customer with the farmer in a remote village - in a part of the world that you may never think of visiting - creating a connection like that - can change a person - bring in humility - more awareness - a greater sense of responsibility and a drive to do good.

Fourthly, Direct Selling companies promote a culture of teamwork and collaboration. They are built on the concept of building a network of like-minded individuals who work together to achieve their goals. This sense of community and shared vision fosters an environment of trust, support, and motivation, which can be difficult to find in traditional work settings.

Fifth - members end up making contacts and connections with people from ALL Around the Globe! They often end up meeting people who they never would have imagined - existed! The kinds of connections some have made - have created generational friendships and extended families! Members come forward to support one another and good causes all over the planet - especially when the purpose of the company is to be of service by providing a product that helps people.

And Last but not least, Direct Selling companies provide a source of income for millions of people around the world. Direct Selling companies have helped many individuals achieve financial freedom, supplement their income, and improve their quality of life. These companies have also been credited with reducing poverty and creating opportunities for people in developing countries.

I see these companies as good because they offer an affordable and accessible way for individuals to start their own business, provide a range of unique and high-quality products to customers, offer opportunities for personal growth and development, promote teamwork and collaboration, and provide a source of income for millions of people around the world.

The products are standardized, no inventory needs to be stored, customers or members would typically always get the freshest product directly from the company, with whatever promos are on at that time - and ORIGINAL products when bought directly from the company and not 3rd party portals - the quality standards are usually set very high especially if the company sells their products in various countries.

While in the past there certainly have been risks associated with MLMs - such as false promises, pyramid schemes, and unethical business practices, the benefits of the GOOD and ethical Direct Selling companies cannot be ignored. Ultimately, whether a Direct Selling company is good or bad depends on the company's ethics, transparency, and commitment to its members and customers, and the manner in which the members and customers - further share the products with their family, friends and community.

When it comes from a place of helping someone enjoy the benefits of the products, I personally see that as a win-win for all. After all - everyone is selling something. Parents negotiate with children and teach them sales and marketing from a very young age. Friends recommend eateries and brands to each other - by simply sharing their personal experience. Remember the episode on Friends - where Phoebe tries to prove that one CAN perform a selfless deed - and fails? Why do some folk feel it's a BAD thing if someone else succeeds? Success when celebrated - by DOING GOOD and Ethically - keeps you in a positive state too! Even a socialite - is selling something.

Selling isn't inherently unethical. Deception is.

A doctor recommends a treatment.

A chef recommends a dish.

A friend recommends a restaurant.

A teacher recommends a book.

A dancer recommends a class that they have attended to get better because you liked how THEY dance.

You recommend something you've personally found valuable.

The ethical question isn't: Are you selling something?

It's:

Are you being honest about WHAT you're selling, WHY you're recommending it, what it truly CAN and Cannot Do and whether it genuinely serves the person you're recommending it to.

The more transparent we are about this - the more trust is built. And truly, the role is to share what you use, what you like - and what makes your life better and easier - and if others like what they see, may they be blessed with these efforts and gifts too!

Please note - these are my personal opinions. You need to study each company that approaches you or appeals to you. I've spent time analysing and studying various companies - there's a very simple process I follow to see that it's in alignment with my values - if you'd like to know what I do/ look at - send me a message on +91-98225-97926 and let's have a chat or maybe I'll write about it in my next blog!

Until then - let's at least try and see the silver lining in every cloud. Let's see the world for possibilities of more goodness instead of where things have been awkward in the past.

Let's believe - that there's innate goodness - in everyone and everything. Happy Healing!
